AliousCristian Romero returned to Tottenham’s starting lineup against Nottingham Forest after serving a lengthy suspension, but his display has drawn heavy criticism, with some branding it a “disgrace” due to his attitude and lack of effort.
The Spurs captain struggled to influence the game and failed to halt Forest’s momentum, appearing off the pace and, at times, careless in his play—moments that could have further punished his team.
According to former Tottenham scout Mick Brown, the club are now open to selling Romero regardless of whether they remain in the Premier League. There is a growing expectation that Spurs could undergo a major squad overhaul in the upcoming transfer window, with the 27-year-old among the players likely to be offloaded.
Tottenham open to Romero exit
Brown previously told Football Insider that Romero has been edging closer to a departure, with long-standing interest from Atletico Madrid still in play.
Recent public criticism of the club from Romero, combined with inconsistent performances, has done little to improve his standing. Following the 3-0 loss to Forest—which leaves Tottenham hovering just above the relegation zone—there is an increasing belief that the defender will be moved on.
Brown expressed concern over Romero’s temperament, noting that while his quality is evident, his mentality remains a problem. He pointed out that Romero is prone to rash challenges, positional lapses, and moments of indiscipline.
Reflecting on the Forest match, Brown criticised Romero’s work rate, suggesting he looked disengaged and uninterested. In one instance, after losing possession high up the pitch, he failed to track back as Forest launched a counterattack, only jogging back after the danger had passed—an attitude Brown described as unacceptable for a captain.
Brown added that Tottenham now face a decision on Romero’s future but believes the club are leaning toward letting him go. Given his recent performances and apparent lack of commitment, he suggested Spurs may benefit from parting ways with the defender.
Spurs planning defensive rebuild
Tottenham’s uncertain league position means they are bracing for the potential departure of several key players this summer, regardless of whether they avoid relegation.
Romero and his defensive partner Micky van de Ven are among those most strongly linked with moves away, attracting interest from clubs across Europe.
As previously reported by Football Insider, Spurs have already started exploring replacement options for both centre-backs. With European qualification now unlikely after another disappointing campaign, the club still hopes to remain an attractive destination for new signings.
