AliousJean-Philippe Mateta continues to make headlines following his impressive end to the 2023/24 season with Crystal Palace.
He’s currently helping France’s Olympic team reach the semi-finals, recently scoring a crucial goal against Argentina in the quarter-finals.
Mateta is also at the center of transfer speculation, with Aston Villa showing interest as contract negotiations with Crystal Palace stall.
Amid this transfer saga, comments Mateta made in January 2021 have resurfaced, causing some concern.
When Mateta initially joined Crystal Palace on an 18-month loan in January 2021, he gave an interview to French publication So Foot.
In it, he suggested he viewed Palace as a stepping stone, saying:
“Crystal Palace can help me go to the club where I will stay for ten years and with which I will win trophies.
“He also expressed ambitious personal goals, stating: “I want to win trophies, be in the French team, play in the Champions League.
I want it all.”These past comments, in light of current transfer interest and stalled contract talks, may be worrying for Crystal Palace fans as they suggest Mateta might not see his long-term future with the club.
