Newcastle United is reportedly preparing to make an improved offer for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi after their initial bid was rejected.

The Magpies are actively seeking a new centre-back due to long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, which have left manager Eddie Howe with limited defensive options.

Currently, Fabian Schar and new signing Lloyd Kelly are set to start the season as the central defensive pair, with Dan Burn and Emil Krafth as alternatives.

However, Newcastle is keen on making a significant defensive signing, with Guehi emerging as their primary target following his impressive performance at Euro 2024 with England.

While some reports suggest a deal is close, Sky Sports News claims this is premature.

Nevertheless, negotiations between Newcastle and Crystal Palace are ongoing for a potential high-value transfer.Newcastle, having had one bid rejected, is expected to return with an improved offer.

There’s optimism that a deal could be reached quickly if an acceptable bid is made for the defender, who is valued at around £60 million.

Despite previous interest from clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, Newcastle currently appears to be the only club actively pursuing Guehi.

Personal terms are not expected to be an issue in negotiations.

Guehi has been with Crystal Palace for three seasons, making 111 appearances across all competitions, including 25 in the Premier League last season.

If the transfer goes through, Chelsea would benefit from a 20% sell-on clause they included when Guehi moved to Palace.
