AliousEverton has had a busy summer transfer window, but they have had to deal with one major outgoing transfer – the sale of midfielder Amadou Onana to Aston Villa for £50 million.
This sale was expected to help the club balance its books, despite the flurry of incoming transfers that have strengthened Sean Dyche’s squad.
During a discussion on The Overlap, former Manchester United player Paul Scholes expressed his doubts about Everton’s decision to sell Onana for such a high fee.
Scholes noted that while Douglas Luiz had to be sold for financial reasons, he believes Luiz will be a bigger miss for Aston Villa than Onana will be for Everton.
Scholes questioned whether Everton has adequately replaced Onana, suggesting that while Tielemans is a good player, he is more of an attacking midfielder and not a natural defensive midfielder like Onana.
Scholes also admitted that he has not been particularly impressed with Onana’s performances, either at Everton or with the Belgian national team, and believed the £50 million fee was too high.
This sentiment was echoed by Jamie Carragher, who also admitted that he never rated Onana highly.
The discussion highlights the differing opinions on the value of Everton’s sale of Onana and whether the club has addressed the gap left by his departure effectively.
