AliousJean-Philippe Mateta might expect to be a starter if he were to transfer from Crystal Palace to Aston Villa, according to former Villa defender Alan Hutton.
However, Hutton believes Mateta would be unlikely to replace Ollie Watkins as the primary striker.
Mateta is currently performing well at the Olympics for France, having scored four goals in five games.
Sources indicate that Villa has expressed interest in signing Mateta as they search for a “lethal” forward.
With Crystal Palace having already sold Michael Olise for £50.8 million and interest growing in other key players, Mateta would likely command a significant fee.
Newcastle United is reportedly in advanced talks to sign Palace defender Marc Guehi.
Mateta played a crucial role in Palace’s strong finish last season under new manager Oliver Glasner, scoring 19 goals in 39 appearances. Given his performance, it’s unlikely he would be content as a backup player if he were to leave Palace.
At Villa, Mateta would have to compete with Watkins and possibly Jhon Duran for playing time.
Hutton suggests the move might make more sense if Duran were to leave the club.
Hutton acknowledges that Mateta would be a valuable addition to Villa’s squad but questions whether the striker would be willing to potentially play a secondary role to Watkins, who had an outstanding season and performed well in the Euros.
The former Villa defender concludes that while Mateta might back himself to become a starter, it’s uncertain whether taking that risk would be worthwhile for the player or the club.
