AliousNewcastle United manager Eddie Howe has indicated that the club won’t overpay for players, specifically regarding their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
The Magpies have submitted what may be their final offer of £65 million for the England international.
Howe emphasized that Newcastle is prepared to end negotiations if progress isn’t made soon.
He recalled past instances where the club faced inflated prices due to their perceived wealth, but stated that this “Newcastle tax” has somewhat diminished as other clubs have recognized their unwillingness to pay exorbitant fees.
While not explicitly naming Guehi, Howe acknowledged the club’s interest in top-tier players.
However, he stressed the difficulty in improving their already strong squad and the importance of making impactful signings rather than merely increasing squad numbers.
Regarding Miguel Almiron, whose potential move to MLS side Charlotte was rejected, Howe expressed empathy for the player dealing with transfer speculation but reaffirmed Almiron’s value to the team.
Looking ahead to their season opener against Southampton, Howe praised opposing manager Russell Martin’s tactical acumen and anticipates a challenging match.
