AliousEberechi Eze, Crystal Palace’s star player, has shared what the referee told him after disallowing his impressive goal during their match against Brentford.
In the Sunday afternoon game at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford emerged victorious with a 2-1 score.
Bryan Mbeumo and Yoan Wissa scored for Brentford, while an own goal by Ethan Pinnock gave Palace their only point.
The controversy arose when Eze’s spectacular free-kick was ruled out midway through the first half.
Referee Sam Barrott had blown his whistle for a foul by Will Hughes on Nathan Collins just as the ball was heading towards Brentford’s goal.
Because the whistle was blown before the ball crossed the line, VAR couldn’t intervene.
Eze revealed on BBC Match of the Day that Barrott admitted to making a mistake.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner commented on the situation, expressing surprise at the early whistle but refusing to complain about the decision.
Glasner praised the referee’s character for admitting the error, saying it shows he’s “a great man.”
However, he emphasized that this admission doesn’t change the outcome.
He also noted that his team had other opportunities to take the lead in the first half but failed to capitalize on them.
The manager concluded that while the team improved in the second half, it wasn’t enough to secure a win on that day.
