AliousCrystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner praised referee Sam Barrott’s character after Barrott acknowledged his error in whistling for a foul before Eberechi Eze scored from a free-kick.
Eze believed he had given Palace the lead in the first half with a long-range strike that caught Brentford’s goalkeeper Mark Flekken off guard.
However, Barrott had already blown his whistle for a foul, ruling that Will Hughes had pushed Nathan Collins.
Replays showed minimal, if any, contact from Hughes.
Due to the whistle being blown before the ball crossed the line, VAR couldn’t overturn the decision.
Eze later revealed that Barrott admitted his mistake in blowing the whistle too early.
Glasner commended Barrott’s honesty, saying it demonstrated good character.
He emphasized that mistakes are part of the game and that he himself had made errors during the match.
While everyone was surprised by the early whistle, Glasner accepted the decision, noting that the rules dictate that a goal doesn’t count if the referee blows the whistle while the ball is in play.
The manager acknowledged other missed opportunities for Palace to take the lead in the first half, citing some sloppy play.
He expressed confidence that the team would improve as they settle into their rhythm.
Regarding Marc Guehi’s future, Glasner stated there was no update.
Despite rejected bids from Newcastle, Guehi started and captained Palace, with Glasner praising his focus and performance.
