AliousLeeds United remains confident about signing Isaac Schmidt from St Gallen, despite the player starting in a Europa Conference League match against Trabzonspor on Thursday, August 29.
According to Graham Smyth of the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds is not worried about Schmidt’s participation in the game affecting their deal.
The 24-year-old Swiss full-back even scored the opening goal in the match, leaving Leeds with just over 24 hours to complete the transfer before the August 30 deadline.
Smyth compared this situation to previous Leeds signings like Raphinha and Connor Roberts, suggesting that playing in a match doesn’t necessarily jeopardize a pending transfer.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke has been open about his desire to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes, with a full-back being one of the priority positions.
While Jayden Bogle has been starting at right-back, Leeds is looking to add depth at left-back to provide competition for Junior Firpo.
The need for additional full-back options has become more pressing following Stuart Dallas’s retirement and Luke Ayling’s departure to Middlesbrough.
Schmidt’s versatility, being able to play on both sides of the defense, makes him an attractive prospect for Leeds.
The deal for Schmidt is expected to be around £2.5 million with add-ons, aligning with Leeds’ strategy of acquiring quality replacements at reasonable prices.
This approach is similar to their recent signings of Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon to replace outgoing players.
