AliousLeeds United may have secured a bargain in Ao Tanaka, who joined from Fortuna Dusseldorf for a reported £3.4 million on deadline day.
While Leeds’ transfer activity wasn’t as extensive as fans had hoped, the two signings they made appear to be shrewd moves.
Tanaka was immediately included in the squad for the home game against Hull City, unlike Isaac Schmidt who wasn’t registered in time.
The Japanese midfielder made his debut as a substitute after Joel Piroe had given Leeds a 2-0 lead.
Despite limited playing time, Tanaka impressed with 18 passes from the 86th minute onwards, helping Leeds maintain control and earning praise from fans.
Tanaka’s efficiency was further highlighted in his substitute appearance for Japan against China.
In a 7-0 victory, he completed more passes than the entire Chinese team after coming on in the 71st minute.
While Tanaka didn’t directly contribute to goals in either game, his ball control and ability to find teammates efficiently are promising signs for Leeds’ style of play under Farke.
It remains to be seen whether Farke will start Tanaka in upcoming matches or continue to use him as a substitute.
However, his performances so far suggest he could be a valuable asset in Leeds’ efforts to control games and progress the ball effectively.
