AliousRoberto De Zerbi has been handed a dual responsibility at Tottenham Hotspur—not only to steer the club clear of relegation but also to oversee a long-term rebuild—after signing a five-year contract with the North London side.
However, his appointment has not been universally welcomed. Several Tottenham supporter groups voiced strong opposition, arguing that bringing in the Italian could undermine the club’s values and identity.
Much of the backlash stems from De Zerbi’s past remarks about Mason Greenwood, who was arrested in 2020 on suspicion of rape and assault before charges were dropped in 2023. Speaking previously, the former Marseille manager described Greenwood as “a good guy” who had “paid a heavy price” and praised the environment that supported his return.
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust (THST) has since made its stance clear. Following an emergency board meeting after the club confirmed De Zerbi’s appointment, the Trust contacted Tottenham to express that it could not support the decision. It also revealed it had received numerous complaints from fans unhappy with the move.
Ali Speechly, co-founder of Women of the Lane, echoed those concerns, stating that members of the group opposed the appointment, with some even considering boycotting matches in response.
In an official statement, THST acknowledged the urgency of appointing a manager with Premier League experience given the club’s precarious situation. However, it stressed that De Zerbi’s past comments were “unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive” to many supporters, particularly those affected by issues of violence against women.
The Trust warned that such remarks risk creating divisions among fans at a time when unity is crucial. It also urged the club to reaffirm its commitment to core values such as equality, respect, and integrity, adding that any perceived sympathy toward alleged perpetrators of violence could seriously damage trust in the club’s leadership.
THST further suggested that a short-term managerial appointment might have been more appropriate, allowing the club to reassess its options in the summer. Instead, it believes the current decision reflects deeper, long-standing issues in Tottenham’s strategic planning.
Despite its criticism, the Trust emphasized that supporters would continue backing the team in its fight for Premier League survival—albeit with mixed emotions.
Meanwhile, journalist Sami Mokbel reports that Tottenham’s hierarchy did review De Zerbi’s comments about Greenwood before finalizing his appointment. The club may now be hoping the controversy fades quickly, as it looks to rally supporters behind the team during a critical period.
Whether that unity can be restored remains uncertain as Spurs battle to secure their top-flight status.
