AliousPatrick Vieira has described Tottenham Hotspur’s current plight as “sad” after their Premier League struggles continued with another defeat on Sunday.
The north London side turned to Igor Tudor earlier this month in a bid to steer them clear of relegation trouble following the departure of Thomas Frank. However, the Croatian has started with consecutive losses.
A home clash against league leaders Arsenal FC was always going to be a daunting assignment, but there was optimism Spurs could bounce back away at Craven Cottage. Instead, they slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Fulham FC in another underwhelming display.
Tottenham were at least spared further damage in the table as relegation rivals — Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Burnley FC — all suffered defeats as well. With ten matches remaining, Spurs sit four points clear of the bottom three ahead of hosting Crystal Palace.
Vieira’s honest assessment
Speaking on Sky Sports, Vieira — a former Arsenal captain — resisted any temptation to revel in Spurs’ misfortune. Instead, he praised their stature and voiced concern about their direction.
He labelled Tottenham as “one of the greatest clubs in London and the Premier League,” but questioned the lack of structure behind their heavy spending in recent years. According to Vieira, investing significant sums without a clear long-term plan or identity makes sustained success unlikely. He admitted it is difficult to understand what direction the club is trying to take.
A worrying trend
Tudor is quickly discovering the scale of the challenge. The defeat at Fulham marked Tottenham’s first 10-game winless run in the Premier League since 1994, during Ossie Ardiles’ tenure.
Spurs have now managed just two wins in their last 19 league outings, with their most recent victory dating back to the end of 2025. Despite this alarming run, Opta’s supercomputer still projects them to avoid relegation, forecasting a 16th-place finish — the position they currently occupy.
For many supporters, merely surviving would represent relief given recent performances. Alarmingly, there were few visible signs of progress at Craven Cottage despite Tudor having a full week on the training ground, raising fresh doubts about whether the right managerial decision was made.
As things stand, Tottenham’s focus has shifted from ambition to survival — a stark reflection of how far expectations have fallen.
