Tottenham Hotspur could be handed a fresh opportunity to sign long-time target Alessandro Bastoni, according to a report from talkSPORT. The Italian defender has come under increasing pressure following his role in Italy’s recent World Cup qualifying disappointment, with some voices now suggesting he may need to leave Serie A.

Bastoni sees red as Italy crash out

Italy national football team suffered a major setback in their bid to reach the World Cup, exiting after a dramatic penalty shootout defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team. Bastoni’s first-half red card proved pivotal, as the Azzurri eventually lost 4-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time in Zenica.

Misses from Pio Esposito and Bryan Cristante allowed Esmir Bajraktarevic to seal victory for the hosts from the spot. The result means Italy, four-time world champions, have now failed to qualify for three consecutive tournaments after also missing out on 2018 and 2022.

Under Gennaro Gattuso, Italy had initially taken the lead through Moise Kean, who capitalised on a mistake by Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj. However, Bastoni’s dismissal for a last-man challenge on Amar Memic shifted the momentum, and substitute Haris Tabakovic later equalised.

Gattuso has since stepped down from his role, while Bosnia progress to a group featuring Canada, Qatar and Switzerland.

Calls grow for Bastoni to leave Italy

According to talkSPORT, Tottenham could now be in a strong position to revive their long-standing interest in Bastoni—provided they avoid relegation.

The 26-year-old has already faced criticism earlier this year following a controversial incident during Inter Milan’s clash with Juventus, where he was accused of celebrating after winning a foul that led to Pierre Kalulu being sent off. That moment drew boos from supporters in subsequent matches.

Former Italy and Inter defender Giuseppe Bergomi has now suggested Bastoni may need a move abroad to reset his career.

Bergomi acknowledged the defender’s mistake but stressed that the ongoing criticism has gone too far, warning that Italian football risks losing one of its standout defenders. He believes a fresh start outside the country could be the best solution for both player and club.

Tottenham are among the clubs monitoring the situation, having tracked Bastoni for years—interest that dates back to the influence of former sporting director Fabio Paratici.

Bastoni is largely regarded as one of the best centre-backs in the world and is just as comfortable playing in a back three or four, so would be an elite weapon for Roberto De Zerbi to have in his arsenal ahead of his first full campaign as Spurs boss next season.
