Leeds United are reportedly closing in on an experienced midfield reinforcement, with former Premier League stalwart Cheikhou Kouyate understood to be undergoing a medical in West Yorkshire. The 34-year-old Senegalese international, who became a free agent after leaving Nottingham Forest last season, has emerged as Leeds’ solution to their current midfield crisis.
The timing is crucial for Leeds, who are grappling with significant injuries to key midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev – both sidelined until well into 2025. With the transfer window closed, the free agent market has become their only avenue for reinforcement. While initial talks with Kouyate hit a snag over the weekend, negotiations have since been revived as Leeds push to strengthen their promotion campaign.
Kouyate brings considerable Premier League experience, having made his mark in English football through successful spells at both West Ham United and Crystal Palace. His time in England began with the Hammers in 2014, where he notched 15 goals across 147 appearances before moving to Palace in 2018. His departure from Selhurst Park in 2022 came down to contract length – he sought a two-year deal while Palace would only offer one.
Leeds manager Daniel Farke has been transparent about his reservations regarding free agent signings this late in the season, noting the typical five-month gap in team training such players face. However, he’s acknowledged that special circumstances might warrant such a move. If completed, Kouyate could potentially make his Leeds debut in early November, when the club faces consecutive London opponents in Millwall and Queens Park Rangers.
The move represents a pragmatic solution for Leeds, balancing the need for immediate midfield cover against the practical challenges of integrating a player mid-season.
