Leeds United showed interest in signing Roland Sallai during the summer transfer window, though the versatile Hungarian forward ultimately joined Galatasaray from SC Freiburg. Initially, Leeds’ approach was rejected by the Bundesliga club, but according to Graham Smyth of The Yorkshire Evening Post, Sallai remained a key target on Leeds’ recruitment list as they sought to complete late-window transfers. While Sallai reportedly expressed interest in joining Leeds, as noted by journalist Sacha Tovolieri, no deal materialized before the English transfer window closed.
With Sallai entering his final contract year at Freiburg, the German club was motivated to sell rather than lose him for free the following year. Galatasaray secured his signature on a four-year contract for approximately €6 million, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The transfer represented a missed opportunity for Leeds, as Sallai’s proven quality and versatility could have helped replace departed forwards like Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter. However, Galatasaray’s ability to offer European football and title contention proved more appealing than Leeds’ Championship status.
Since joining Galatasaray, Sallai has made three appearances, including a debut against rivals Fenerbahce. He’s been used in various attacking positions within their 4-2-3-1 formation but hasn’t yet made a significant impact, with modest performance ratings. Ironically, despite European football being a key factor in his decision, he cannot participate in the Europa League until February due to registration timing. While Leeds have strengthened their attack with signings like Largie Ramazani and Manor Solomon, they still lack the creative passing ability that Sallai could have provided in the number 10 role.
