One of the immediate challenges facing Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur is cutting out the costly individual mistakes that have plagued the team throughout their Premier League campaign.

The Lilywhites currently sit 17th in the table, having conceded 50 goals in 31 matches — the fourth-highest in the division. If they are to avoid a historic drop into the EFL Championship, tightening up defensively will be essential.

De Zerbi, who replaced Igor Tudor during the international break, has had valuable time to work with his squad on the training ground ahead of next weekend’s clash with Sunderland. However, not all of Tottenham’s problems can be solved through coaching alone, and major decisions will be required in the upcoming summer transfer window.

If Spurs manage to stay up, De Zerbi is expected to take a firm approach by offloading several underperforming players and reinvesting in the squad.

Inter interested in Spurs goalkeeper

Tottenham’s struggles this season are largely down to inconsistent performances across the pitch, and the club may now be forced into a squad overhaul ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Encouragingly for Spurs, there is reported interest in one of their struggling players. According to Calcio Mercato, Inter Milan are keen on signing goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario this summer.

The Italian giants are believed to be searching for a long-term replacement for Yann Sommer and have identified Vicario as a leading target. Tottenham are reportedly prepared to demand up to £17 million for the Italy international, a fee Inter are capable of meeting.

While Inter are said to be ready to step up their pursuit, it remains unclear when an official bid will be submitted.

Why Spurs should consider selling

Tottenham may be wise to capitalise on Inter’s interest, as Vicario’s performances have raised concerns, making him one of the team’s most unreliable defensive figures in recent times.

A comparable case is Emerson Royal, whose inconsistent displays during his spell in North London often left Spurs exposed defensively. In the 2023/24 season alone, he was dribbled past 22 times in just 11 starts, and across three seasons, that number rose to 66 — highlighting his vulnerability.

That lack of defensive solidity ultimately led to his move to AC Milan in 2024.

Now, Vicario could be heading toward a similar exit — potentially to Inter Milan — following a series of unconvincing performances. The goalkeeper has already made four errors leading to shots or goals in domestic and European competitions this season, after registering six such mistakes in the 2024/25 league campaign.

Given these struggles, Spurs may see this as the right moment to move him on and strengthen their defensive options ahead of a crucial new season.

Alongside his tendency to make costly mistakes, Guglielmo Vicario has also struggled significantly with his shot-stopping this season. Statistically, he ranks as the third-worst goalkeeper in the Premier League based on Goals Prevented, having allowed 5.22 more goals than expected from the quality of shots he has faced.

This marks a clear decline from the previous campaign, where the Italian international placed 16th in the league with 0.59 goals prevented — highlighting a noticeable regression since the 2024/25 season.

Given both his frequent errors and underwhelming shot-stopping, Vicario has emerged as arguably the most vulnerable player in the squad — and perhaps Tottenham’s biggest defensive weakness since Emerson Royal departed for AC Milan.

With reported interest from Inter Milan, Roberto De Zerbi should consider making Vicario his top priority for a summer exit. Selling him could pave the way for a more dependable goalkeeper to arrive and bring greater stability between the posts.
