A Celtic supporter has been barred from attending future games after making a deeply offensive gesture referencing the Ibrox disaster during last weekend’s high-stakes clash between Rangers and Celtic.
The incident occurred when the individual was caught on camera displaying a mobile phone bearing the number “66”—a grim allusion to the number of lives lost in the 1971 Ibrox tragedy, when a crush at the stadium during an Old Firm match claimed the lives of 66 Rangers supporters. Compounding the gesture, the fan was later seen holding up six fingers on each hand, further emphasizing the reference.
Following swift backlash and public outrage, Celtic confirmed that they conducted an internal investigation and have suspended the individual from attending future fixtures. A spokesperson for the club told STV: “We have investigated the matter. Clearly we condemn such conduct and the club has taken the appropriate action with regards to this individual.”
Rangers also issued a strong statement condemning the act. “The Ibrox disaster remains the darkest day in our club’s history and continues to affect a number of families to this day,” a club spokesperson said. “The mocking and celebration of any tragedy is abhorrent and has no place in any football stadium or society as a whole.”
The Ibrox disaster, which occurred on January 2, 1971, remains one of the most tragic events in British football history.
Rangers will return to the pitch this weekend as they host Aberdeen in their second-to-last home game of the season at Ibrox.
