AliousRoy Keane jokingly suggested that Tottenham Hotspur could be playing in the Championship next season during a debate about the best stadiums in English football.
Spurs are currently facing a serious relegation threat. With just seven matches left to play, the North London side sit only one point above the drop zone, leaving little margin for error.
The club has already gone through managers Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor this season, with Roberto De Zerbi now tasked with steering them to safety after recently signing a five-year deal.
However, Keane—speaking on Stick to Football—cast doubt on their chances of survival. When Wayne Rooney named Tottenham’s stadium as the best in the country, Keane quipped, “In the Championship next year,” prompting laughter from Rooney and Gary Neville before the discussion moved on.
While Keane’s comment appeared partly tongue-in-cheek, the threat of relegation remains very real for Spurs.
There are, however, some encouraging signs. Reports indicate that De Zerbi has already made a positive impression on the squad with his training sessions. Tottenham insider John Wenham echoed that sentiment, noting the improved mood within the camp.
He explained that players have responded well to training, leaving sessions upbeat and motivated. Even individuals like Micky van de Ven—who previously reflected the team’s struggles—now appear fully engaged with De Zerbi’s methods, which bodes well for the club.
Wenham also highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing that there is no time for a gradual adjustment period. He praised De Zerbi’s pragmatic approach, noting that while the manager has a clear footballing philosophy, his immediate focus is on simplifying things and grinding out results.
The plan, Wenham suggested, is to concentrate on the basics for the remainder of the season and secure as many points as possible, with the intention of implementing De Zerbi’s full style of play more thoroughly during pre-season.
