However, confidence within the squad appears completely drained, and that lack of belief is a major factor pushing the club toward the drop.

Several issues have contributed to their struggles, but goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has arguably been among the most concerning. His performances this season have raised serious doubts, and there is a growing case for Tottenham to part ways with him in the summer.

Now nearing the end of his third season at the club, Vicario has struggled to meet expectations and has faced heavy criticism. Back in December, Nigel Reo-Coker remarked that describing the Italian as having “a tough time” was an understatement—and little has changed since then.

Currently sidelined following hernia surgery, Vicario is expected to return before the season concludes. Still, there is a strong argument that his time at the club should come to an end.

Simply put, his displays this season have fallen well below the required standard. Too often error-prone and lacking assurance in goal, he has failed to inspire confidence.

With Vicario out injured, Antonín Kinský has stepped in and shown encouraging signs, responding positively to De Zerbi’s faith—even in defeat. As a result, it may be time for Spurs to consider a new long-term option between the posts rather than reinstating Vicario as their first-choice goalkeeper next season.

The 29-year-old is expected to be moved on this summer, giving ENIC Group the chance to rebuild Tottenham’s defence from the ground up.

But Vicario may not be the only departure. An even bigger name at the heart of the backline could also be heading for the exit.

Spurs’ “new Ledley King” facing uncertain future

Tottenham could certainly use a fully fit Ledley King in his prime right now. Instead, they have Cristian Romero—who may have already played his last game for the club after suffering a knee injury in the recent loss to Sunderland.

It’s another cruel setback for a centre-back who has struggled to maintain consistent availability in the Premier League. With speculation growing over a potential summer exit, Romero’s situation draws comparisons to King, who spent his entire career at Spurs but managed to reach 30 league appearances in a season only twice due to persistent injury issues.

At his best, King was a composed and authoritative defender, comfortable on the ball and a natural leader. In some respects, he still stands above Romero, even though Spurs insider John Wenham has described the Argentine as “the closest we’ve had to Ledley King in terms of impact.”

There’s little doubt that Romero remains Tottenham’s top centre-back, clearly ahead of Micky van de Ven, whose defensive weaknesses are sometimes masked by his pace and athleticism.

Tottenham reportedly value their captain at £87 million, but securing a transfer anywhere near that figure could prove difficult—especially if the looming threat of relegation becomes a reality.

That said, Romero remains one of the most valuable players in Roberto De Zerbi’s squad, and reported interest from clubs such as Liverpool and Atletico Madrid indicates that ENIC could still secure a significant transfer fee for him.

There have also been suggestions that the Argentine defender has a release clause in his Tottenham contract, but regardless of the specifics, it appears increasingly unlikely that he will still be at the club next season.

Comments from Chris Waddle, who told Football FanCast that Romero “never really wanted to be at Tottenham,” further underline the situation. It feels like a tipping point has been reached for a player who, despite his talent, has struggled as a leader and often lets his temperament get the better of him.

Much like Ledley King in terms of ability, Romero is undoubtedly among the Premier League’s top defenders. However, his recurring injury issues, combined with concerns over discipline, have become a growing problem. He misses too many matches for varying reasons, and a summer departure now seems inevitable as Spurs look to reset and begin a new chapter.
