One of those targets is Andy Robertson of Liverpool FC. Earlier this week, respected journalist David Ornstein reported that Spurs are leading the race to sign the Scotland captain, who is expected to leave Anfield at the end of the season after nine highly successful years. Although clubs such as Juventus FC, Atletico Madrid, and SSC Napoli have shown interest in a potential free transfer, Tottenham are currently in pole position.
Providing a fresh update, journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed on X that Spurs have already reached a verbal agreement to sign Robertson this summer. However, the move hinges on the club maintaining their Premier League status.
Tottenham had previously pursued Robertson during the January transfer window, with both clubs reportedly agreeing terms before the 32-year-old made a late decision to remain at Liverpool. The Merseyside club were also unwilling to sanction his departure at the time due to their inability to secure a replacement.
Since joining Liverpool from Hull City in 2017, Robertson has won nine major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League and two Premier League titles. Despite being 32, he still has plenty to offer, and Spurs would greatly benefit from his experience, leadership, and winning mentality.
Should Tottenham avoid relegation, Robertson could become De Zerbi’s first signing of the summer. The swift progress in negotiations highlights both the club’s intent and the player’s belief in the project being built under the Italian manager.
For now, all focus shifts back to the pitch, as De Zerbi and his squad aim to navigate their remaining fixtures—starting with Sunday’s crucial trip to Sunderland—in a bid to secure their top-flight status.
