Simons has been something of a mystery since arriving from RB Leipzig. While his talent has never been in doubt, previous managers were reluctant to give him a consistent starting role.
That may now be about to change. The 23-year-old delivered a standout performance against Brighton, earning praise as Tottenham’s best player on the night. His display included a superb assist, whipping in a precise cross for Pedro Porro to head home, and he also struck the post before eventually finding the net with a brilliant second-half goal.
His overall influence suggests he has now firmly made his case to be a regular starter, especially with a crucial clash against Wolves on the horizon.
Gallagher Steps Up
Conor Gallagher has faced criticism since his January move from Atlético Madrid, particularly given his reported £200,000-a-week wages. Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara had even labelled him “absolutely awful” after the defeat to Palace last month.
However, under De Zerbi, Gallagher appears to be finding his footing. After being left out in previous matches, he has now started consecutive games and delivered a much-improved display against Brighton.
The midfielder’s energy and pressing stood out, with his performance earning a 7/10 rating and being described as one of his best in a Tottenham shirt so far. While expectations remain high, if he continues to show that level of intensity and commitment in the remaining fixtures, he has a strong case to remain in the starting lineup alongside Simons.
