Tottenham came agonisingly close to securing a crucial three points against Brighton this afternoon before Georginio Rutter struck a late equaliser.

Spurs’ defending in the closing stages left a lot to be desired as they tried to protect a 2-1 lead. Kevin Danso was dispossessed inside his own penalty area, allowing Brighton to work the ball into a dangerous position before it was squared to Rutter, who finished clinically to level the score.

It had looked like Xavi Simons had won it for Tottenham with a stunning late strike in the second half, but they were unable to see out the game. The result leaves Spurs still in the relegation zone, with West Ham and Nottingham Forest sitting above them and both still having games in hand.

While it may seem harsh on Tottenham, Brighton produced a well-worked move and Rutter applied a composed finish. However, given the timing and importance of the game, Spurs will feel they should have managed the situation far better.

Can Tottenham escape relegation?

Tottenham brought in Roberto De Zerbi in a bid to steer them away from danger, but so far the task has proven difficult for the Italian.

His reign began with a 1-0 defeat away at Sunderland, followed by a draw at home to Brighton.
