The midfielder has delivered a reliable, if unspectacular, campaign, occasionally stepping up with decisive contributions — most notably his crucial goal against Wolves on Saturday, which helped secure Spurs’ first league win of the calendar year.
Tottenham do hold an option to make the move permanent for around £22m this summer, but there is still no clarity over whether they will activate the clause.
Reports from Germany suggest that recent changes around the club, including uncertainty over Thomas Frank’s future influence, have added further doubt regarding Palhinha’s long-term place at N17 as his loan spell nears its conclusion.
According to Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg, Tottenham are expected to push for a reduced fee from Bayern Munich, as they are unwilling to meet the full £22m valuation. That stance has been echoed by Sport1, which claims Spurs are satisfied with Palhinha’s impact but will only proceed with a permanent deal if Bayern agree to lower their asking price.
While Tottenham view the current clause as excessive, Bayern are reportedly keen to offload the 30-year-old and minimise their financial losses. The Bundesliga giants are also said to have no long-term plans for Palhinha at the Allianz Arena, with Vincent Kompany’s squad planning focused increasingly on younger profiles, leaving the Portuguese midfielder without a role.
Bayern are therefore open either to Spurs triggering the clause or entering renegotiations over a lower fee.
However, Tottenham’s ongoing battle to secure Premier League safety could prove decisive. The report suggests that relegation would effectively end any chance of a permanent deal, as committing £22m for a 30-year-old would become unfeasible — with a transfer “almost certainly off the table” should Spurs fail to maintain their top-flight status.
