Sunderland are preparing to say goodbye to Ian Poveda after the winger reportedly agreed to join Colombian outfit Inter Bogotá, according to journalist Pipe Sierra.
The 26-year-old has settled personal terms with the club following what has been described as a determined effort from their leadership to secure his signature. As things stand, Poveda is expected to depart the Stadium of Light and resume his career in his homeland.
Although multiple Colombian sides had shown interest in the wide man, Inter Bogotá acted swiftly to finalise an agreement. Details regarding the transfer structure — including whether the deal will be permanent or a loan — have yet to be disclosed.
Out of favour despite long-term deal
Poveda’s impending exit comes after a challenging spell on Wearside. In December, reports from Colombia highlighted that he had ended a 112-day absence with a brief 45-minute appearance against Norwich City.
Importantly, his lack of involvement was not injury-related. Instead, head coach Régis Le Bris had omitted him from his senior plans. At the time, it was suggested Sunderland might look to move him on in January, even though no firm offers were mentioned.
Despite being under contract until 2027, Poveda’s role at the club had become increasingly uncertain. His exclusion from Le Bris’ project made a transfer feel inevitable.
A fresh start ahead?
With an agreement now reportedly in place, a clean break appears close. For Sunderland, the move would formalise a situation that has been developing for months.
For Poveda, a return to Colombia could provide much-needed regular game time. Opportunities have been limited in England, and a switch home may offer the stability and continuity he has been missing.
The only remaining question surrounds the exact terms of the deal. A permanent transfer would allow Sunderland to fully move on, while a loan could leave the door slightly ajar for future considerations.
