AliousRoberto De Zerbi has inherited a Tottenham Hotspur side sitting just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, with only seven matches remaining to secure their top-flight status.
Known for his possession-based, attacking style of football, De Zerbi is expected to bring a proactive and fluid approach to Spurs—something fans will likely appreciate. However, given the club’s current predicament, results may take priority over style. Tottenham now need a pragmatic approach that delivers points and ensures survival.
The Italian coach must therefore strike a balance, maximise the potential of his squad, and guide the team to safety. Beyond the immediate battle, De Zerbi is also expected to play a key role in shaping the squad in the summer, influencing several player futures—though one name appears to be heading for the exit: Guglielmo Vicario.
Vicario agrees terms with Inter Milan
Inter Milan have been monitoring Vicario’s situation for some time, and a return to Serie A could appeal to the Tottenham goalkeeper. The 29-year-old has struggled for form this season, yet Inter remain interested in signing him as a long-term replacement for the experienced Yann Sommer.
Last month, Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio visited London to lay the groundwork for a potential transfer. Reports suggest the Italian giants believe they could secure Vicario for around €18m this summer. Now, fresh developments indicate progress in the deal.
According to L’Interista, Vicario has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan and is set to sign a contract worth €3.5m per season. While an agreement with the player is in place, Inter must still negotiate a transfer fee with Tottenham. The club is reportedly preparing an official bid.
Spurs may look to move on
Vicario has been one of Tottenham’s underperforming players this season, and even if the club avoids relegation, a summer parting of ways may be beneficial for both sides.
The goalkeeper does not appear to fit De Zerbi’s tactical demands, particularly in a system that requires the goalkeeper to play a role in build-up, almost like an additional defender. Vicario has often looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet, raising concerns about his suitability.
With the Italian seemingly open to a move to Inter, Tottenham could look to bring in a replacement such as Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen ahead of the 2026/27 season.
