The Professional Footballers’ Association is reportedly set to take strong action against referee Stuart Attwell following intense backlash over his handling of the incident, with scrutiny mounting on both on-field officiating and VAR intervention.
The flashpoint came early in the game when Spurs defender Destiny Udogie went down inside the box under a challenge from Yankuba Minteh, only for appeals to be waved away. With the score still 0-0, Attwell stood by his decision, while VAR official Jarred Gillett chose not to intervene.
The decision has since been heavily criticised, most notably by former referee Dermot Gallagher, who blasted the situation and described the VAR handling as “bullshit,” reigniting debate over consistency and accountability in officiating.
Former Premier League striker Jay Bothroyd also insisted Tottenham were wrongly denied, arguing: “That is a definite penalty. If that happens anywhere else on the pitch, it’s given as a foul. There is clear contact, and I do not understand how it’s not been awarded.”
Gallagher, however, suggested the VAR’s reluctance to intervene stemmed from a wider pattern of deference to on-field decisions. “The only certainty is the VAR is not getting involved because whatever the referee gives, he will stick with,” he explained, pointing to a systemic issue rather than an isolated error.
Despite the officiating controversy, Xavi Simons delivered a standout performance, assisting Pedro Porro before scoring what looked to be the winning goal. However, Brighton struck late through Georginio Rutter, salvaging a dramatic 2-2 draw.
Another talking point emerged around Simons’ goal celebration, with some questioning why he avoided a booking after jumping into the crowd and removing his shirt. Gallagher defended the decision, explaining that referees are advised to avoid punishing multiple celebration-related offences in one instance.
“If you send him off for that, it would be ridiculous,” Bothroyd added, calling for greater flexibility in how such rules are applied.
Meanwhile, the controversy continues to grow beyond the match itself. With the PFA now reportedly reviewing Attwell’s performance and considering disciplinary measures, the situation could mark a significant escalation in how refereeing standards are enforced.
