AliousTottenham Hotspur were left stunned during their Premier League clash with Sunderland after a first-half penalty decision was dramatically overturned—prompting an official explanation from the league.
In what marked the debut of new boss Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs started brightly at the Stadium of Light, lining up an attacking trio of Randal Kolo Muani, Dominic Solanke, and Richarlison.
The early momentum appeared to pay off when Kolo Muani was awarded a penalty midway through the first half by referee Rob Jones.
The French forward went down under pressure from Sunderland defenders Omar Alderete and Luke O’Nien, leading to the initial spot-kick decision—one that sparked immediate outrage from the home side.
Following a VAR check, Jones was advised to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. Upon closer inspection, replays clearly showed that Alderete had made contact with the ball before any collision occurred, with Kolo Muani only falling after tangling with O’Nien.
As a result, the referee reversed his call, cancelling the penalty and restarting play with a drop ball.
The Premier League later clarified the decision via its Match Centre, confirming that the defender had “clearly played the ball first before any subsequent contact,” meaning no foul had occurred.
The incident set the tone for a fiery first half, with tensions boiling over between both sides. Tottenham defenders Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, and Pedro Porro all found themselves in the referee’s book, while Sunderland’s Brian Brobbey was also cautioned after a heated clash.
Despite the controversy, the moment has been widely viewed as a rare example of VAR being used correctly.
Rather than interfering unnecessarily, the technology stepped in to correct a “clear and obvious” error—precisely how it was intended to function.
